Geek Anthropology

Today, during Walking Cult, it was demanded of us to come up with some explanation of “Geekiness.”  This was in response to the 48 points I accumulated on MSNBC’s Geek Quiz .

First, people are considered “geeky” for multiple reasons.  Having an avid interest in computers is the normal association.  However, those who are overly fanatical concerning Star Wars are also considered geeky.  We also thought of “Band Geeks.”   Lastly, those who know a lot about Math & Science would also be considered geeks.
We decided that it cannot simply be having lots of knowledge or experience in a given field.  Those who know a lot of cars, for example, are not thought of as geeks.  And those who excel in sports are considered the opposite of a geek.

In conclusion, it could be one of two things.  1)  Avid knowledge or participation of something that is socially isolating, or 2) Whatever the bullies can’t do.

  1. Wow.

I’m “Stuck in the Last Century” according to that quiz.

I’d better go to graduate school or something.

  2. I am also stuck in the last century with a lowly 15.
What has ENC done with its electrical engineering majors.

Maybe it is geeky that Dave and I are the first ones to try the test just to see how geeky we are. We must have been worried or something.

  3. Dave, don’t worry. You’re still a geek in my book.
    And my mom’s.
I didn’t think it was a very good geek quiz. I did love answering the “I built my own linux box” question, that totally redeemed it for me.
