So Much For Pathos

August 31st, 2006 No comments
In Freshman Speech class (which I took as a Sophomore…) we look at the three things that give any speech persusive strength: Pathos, Logos, and Ethos. These are Greek words which in this context mean Passion, Logic, and Ethics (respectively). Any speech can use just one or any combination of these persuasive appeals. People are generally convinced of something by seeing someone else’s feelings about it (pathos, passion), by using reason (logos, logic) or by appealing to the quality of their character (ethos, ethics). This morning on the radio I heard a comedian who was being interviewed sing a song about Touchdown Jesus (pictured above). This person sang with as much pathos as any song I have heard in church, but they were singing about how Jesus looked like he was made out of butter in this statue just off of I-75 in Ohio.
So much for pathos.

In my last post, I mentioned that some of the recent traffic to joedonahue.org has been coming from hotornotdesigns.com, where people rate the attractiveness of websites. This is a screenshot I just took.. that has joedonahue.org coming in at number 17!

Lobsters and European Visitors

August 22nd, 2006 No comments
There are some things in life that simply come at you unexpected. One of them for us was the arrival of four lobsters which were overnighted to our doorstep from the coast of Maine as a birthday present from my Mom. It left me confused, not knowing if I was up to the task of what lie ahead. Alas, after church on Sunday we set a pot of water to boil and in short order had cooked up our four underwater allies and extracted from them all that we could. It took some time, but we fixed up a couple of lobster rolls that were wicked good! Thanks Mom!
Also, as some have noticed, Devastatin’ Dave has posted on here all the way from Barcelona, Spain. I have included a screenshot of my Google Analytics web overlay and referral sources (click to enlarge). This is just for the month of August so far, and its cool to see not only where people are when they visit (From Munich, Germany to Barcelona, Spain to Winnipeg, Canada and Tucson, Arizona!) but how they get to my site, which ranges from directly going to site to finding it through google, facebook, xanga, myspace, and lately from hotornotdesigns.com!

Starfarers and Red Sox

August 13th, 2006 7 comments

Thursday night, courtesy of Nazarene Publishing House, Julie and went to a Royals vs Red Sox game. The seats were really good, and it seemed that everyone else around us were Red Sox fans!! After spending 4 years in Boston for college, it is hard not to cheer them on. And cheer them on we did, as they lost. They lost all three games against the Royals, who are the worst team in Major League Baseball. There were a few Royals fans who brought brooms and swung them around in honor of their “Clean Sweep.” Seriously…

After playing Settlers of Catan at small group last week, the Dawson’s borrowed it and became so enamored that Tim and I went out to pick up Starfarers of Catan. Tim and I went while Julie and her sister were out shopping, and after Tim dropped me off, I realized I had locked myself out of the house! So I called Julie, and my parents, and read through our mail, and just sat on our front steps for awhile until our neighbor Jason came out. We started talking and it turns out his computer was running slow, so I got to go over and help him out with that. I also helped him move his entertainment center to the basement, as his new 50″ high-def flat-screen TV was too big for it. It was really cool to be able to spend some time with them and also help them out.

So, this is kinda funny to me. Julie, after asking me nicely for a hundred times to email our wedding photographer about the negatives, finally put her foot down and made me do it tonight. As I am looking for her website, I discover instead her husband’s website, who is a software developer! I started looking into his work, and it turns out that he works for JotSpot wikis, who I have been researching for the last two weeks as our company is searching for an enterprise wiki solution. Small world!

Silicon Valley and The Nikon Returns

August 8th, 2006 6 comments

It’s not every day I get a call from Palo Alto, California. Heck, most days I don’t get work-related phone calls from even within the company. But yesterday, my phone started ringing, and the caller id said “Palo Alto, CA.” It was just a salesperson regarding an email I had sent him, but it was still kinda cool.

My sister, while fiddling with my camera (which has been out of commission for a week or so) got it working again! This is probably the third time that I have had a problem with it that appears to warrant the purchasing of a new camera, but the Nikon rides again! I’m stoked, because we would not have been buying a digital camera anytime soon…

Speaking of my sister, we will be departing relatively soon for the airport, as she is to return back to the east coast. Lucky. It’s been really great having her out here with us for a few days, but it has gone by fast, and after having Crystal here for a month, Sara’s visit seems really short! I love my sister, and did I mention she brought us Dunkin Donuts coffee? I’m going to go brew some right now.
